Design and Technology

It is our intention that every child will be given the opportunity to learn and develop key knowledge and skills relating to design and technology as they move through school, including designing, constructing, assembling and using finishing techniques to complete a product. As part of our design curriculum they will learn skills to support their understanding of textiles, food and nutrition, mechanisms, materials and structures and electrical systems. The development of these skills can be tracked through cross curriculum books and Showbie. Each year the curriculum builds on previous learning with a clear progression of technical skills, with the introduction of electronics in KS2.

Using these skills, we intend that all children have the chance to express themselves creatively, experiment and take risks, try new things and develop a confidence in designing, constructing and assembling models or products. We will provide opportunities for children to have freedom in how they create using different materials and techniques within a structured criterion. There will be opportunities to plan their work and reflect on their success throughout the planning, making and evaluating stages. We will use our school environment to celebrate creativity within school and children will take pride and enjoyment from sharing their work with others. We will strive to give children opportunities to share their work with the wider community through exhibitions and local projects.
