International Learning

International projects, links and global awareness at St Stephen’s

We are involved in a number of International projects and events at Saint Stephen’s. We believe that pupils should have a deeper understanding of different cultures and values and are prepared for life and work in a global society. Here are a few things that we are doing this year.

 

We are linked to a school in South Africa and Mr Baxter has been teaching South African songs and drumming, and children have been learning about South African culture. We are also teaching our Sneinton anthem to our partner school there, and sending them videos of our singing.

 

In French lessons, the children are working with our partner school in France, and focussing on different aspects of school life in France and England.

 

We continue to learn about faiths from around the world, and visit places of worship, as well as learning about and celebrating other religions.

 

FS1 – Parents have completed a survey and been invited in to school to talk to the children about an aspect of their own background and culture.

 

Year 1 – Children have been working on the ‘Dear You’ project, and are exchanging their artwork with schools abroad. They have also had an exciting Skype session with a school in Mexico.

 

Year 3 – Children are listening to, and discussing stories and cultures from around the world. Year 6 – Following a visit to Beth Shalom, and from the Red Cross, Class 6 are looking at ethnic intolerance and the current refugee crisis.

 

We have also celebrated Internationalism in many ways this year. We had a whole school event in September for the European Day of Languages. Mrs Hoffman organised the ‘Bike Around the World’ event earlier in the Spring term, as well as a ‘Food from your Roots’ session with the Parents Inspire Group. A group of pupils attended a Languages Games event at King’s College, London in October. Our ‘Family Meal’, organised by Mrs Buyers was a huge success, and brought together many families from different backgrounds and cultures.

 

We are involved in the ‘We project’ giving our pupils an insight in to global issues and the opportunity to make an impact. Our Community Action Day on June 7th also had an International theme. Children created a display for Sneinton Library about their heritage; Year 2 decorated cup cakes with flags and delivered them to a local care home. Pupils litter picked in the community and looked at the impact of waste and litter on a global scale. Our chosen Transform Trust charity is ‘Sal’s Shoes’ and we will be supporting this charity on the final day of term with a whole Trust event.
