History and Geography

HISTORY

The History curriculum at Sneinton C of E primary school intends to cover the statutory guidance set out by the national curriculum in a systematic way that provides complete coverage and progression from foundation to year six. In addition to this the children will have studied how history has developed their local area.

We recognise that having a thorough understanding of history and how it has shaped the world we live in today, empowers children to make informed decisions for the future, allowing them to become responsible global citizens. We therefore use the historical *big ideas; Chronology, Interpretation, Continuity and change, Similarity and difference, Cause and consequence, Significance to provide context and clarity to the history curriculum.

GEOGRAPHY

We recognise that having a sound understanding of geography and an inquisitive, invested attitude to the world around us is vital in becoming a global citizen. We therefore use the geography *big ideas; The physical world, Human Environments, Interdependence, Place and Space, Young people’s lives and Scale to teach the children how Geography relates to their community, the wider world and their future potential through using the learning tree skills, creating, wondering, trying, concentrating, remembering and checking.

We support our children to learn to a deep level, to know more and remember more. In our spiral curriculum model, we recognise that children go through the process of the learning loop to get to syntheses. Our Geography planning and lessons are informed by the following stages: the hook, investigation, input, practice, feedback, application and synthesis. Through continual assessment for learning, we adapt our learning sequence to suit the children needs, we provide opportunities for the children to connect their learning in geography with other areas of the curriculum to create schemas and embed their learning.
